Project Description

SMH Technologies is excited to announce the expanded support for serial NAND memories, highlighting the availability of the World’s first x8 Octal NAND flash from Winbond on the FlashRunner 2.0 platform.

The W35N-JW Octal NAND Flash represents a fusion of NAND memory performance and NOR memory reliability, thanks to its high-quality fabrication process. Currently offered in 1 Gbit, 2 Gbit, and 4 Gbit densities, these Flash memories deliver exceptional capabilities.

FlashRunner 2.0 fully supports serial NAND flash memories in SPI, Quad-SPI, and Octo-SPI up to 75 MHz, from all major memory manufacturers in the market.

The growing popularity of these serial NAND memories is evident as they progressively replace serial NOR memories in various applications. Their cost-effectiveness, stemming from a simpler architecture and more economical production, makes them particularly appealing. Furthermore, as NOR flash memories face limitations in capacity beyond 512 Mbit, coupled with escalating die size and costs, NAND memories emerge as a superior alternative.

NAND flash memories excel in erase and program speed, a crucial factor for applications like ADAS, clusters, gaming consoles, systems with fast over-the-air updates (OTA), autonomous driving systems, and general artificial intelligence systems.

On the other hand, NAND flash memories may exhibit lower reliability due to potential bitflips and bad blocks, FlashRunner 2.0 properly manages these peculiarities for both parallel and serial NAND memories. Notably, the new Winbond serial NAND memories stand out for their guarantee of no bad blocks and the inclusion of on-die ECC. These two features make them user-friendly and easier to integrate, functioning similarly to a serial NOR, thus enhancing their usability.
